Gronkiewicz's design for Aura stands out with its contrasting materials and textures. Polished and matte brass fixtures, veneered and raw metal surfaces, and soft patterned carpets lining the walls create a visually striking and harmonious interior. To optimize the limited space, custom-made tables can be arranged in various combinations using a set of holes in the floor. This flexibility allows for different seating arrangements and enhances the interaction between customers.
The use of gold is a prominent feature in Aura's design. Brass fixtures, shelves, and lighting pendants bring a touch of luxury and elegance to the space. The drinks counter, topped with golden plates, rests on a mismatched marble base, adding a touch of sophistication. Velvet upholstered seats and cobalt blue walls complement the red hues of the floor and vintage barstools, creating a vibrant and inviting ambiance.
The realization of Aura's design involved collaboration with local craftsmen and contractors. Arched benches were crafted by a neighboring craftsman, while stone slabs cladding the bar were sourced from a stonemason based in a Warsaw cemetery. The walls were painted by a local painter, and old carpets were used to adorn the main wall instead of wallpaper. These customized solutions and attention to detail contribute to the unique character of Aura.
With an area of 25 square meters and a height of 4.8 meters, Aura's design maximizes the use of space while maintaining an ergonomic layout. The combination of small and large tables, adjustable to different heights, allows for versatile seating arrangements. The design also takes into account natural lighting conditions, with dimmable lights that transform the space from a daytime cafe to an evening bar or even a small concert venue.
Aura is located on the ground floor of a 19th-century tenement house in the center of Warsaw. The building, which survived German bombings during World War II, has a rich history that Gronkiewicz aimed to evoke through his design. The project was executed in January 2019 and opened to the public in June of the same year.
Aura's unique design has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2020, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Aura's design stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to creating a better world.
